Ace Your Next Interview: Answer The Most Common Interview Questions

It's completely normal to go to an interview filled with nerves, but imagine striding in, taking a seat, and feeling confident about every question that comes your way.

We can’t promise that level of calm, but we can hope that after reading this guide, you’ll feel much closer to that than feeling lost.

Though we’d love to, we can’t predict exactly what you’ll be asked, but there are certain questions that come up time and time again in interviews, and being prepared for them can make all the difference.

That’s why we’ve put together a list of the most common interview questions you might face, along with advice on how to answer them confidently. The goal isn’t to make your answers sound rehearsed, but to help you feel prepared and armed with the right tools so you can answer naturally and with confidence.

1. Tell me about yourself

This isn’t just small talk; it’s your opportunity to set the tone for the interview.

Employers are looking for a concise summary of your career so far and what makes you the right fit for the role and company. Focus on your professional background, highlighting relevant skills and experience and try to avoid going into too much personal detail.

Example: “I’ve spent the last X years working in customer service, where I’ve been successful in improving the customer experience. Prior to that, I spent X years in administration. I’m now looking for a move into a role that allows me to take on more responsibility.”

2. What are your strengths?

This really is your time to shine, but remember to keep it relevant to the job.

Employers are looking for what you can bring to the table that adds value to their team. Be sure to pick three key strengths that align with the job description and use specific examples to back them up.

Example: “I’m highly organised, which helps me manage a busy workload and pick up on different tasks. In my last role, I introduced and implemented Asana software, which helped everyone stay on track and meant we could all collaborate and step in where needed.”

3. What are your weaknesses?

This one is tricky, but being honest is the best approach (just put a positive spin on it!).

Employers are looking for people who are self-aware and proactive about personal growth. Choose a real area for improvement that doesn’t directly impact the core duties of the role, and explain how you’re working to overcome it.

Example: “Public speaking makes me nervous and doesn’t come naturally to me, so I’ve started to take the lead in some meetings. This has really helped me become much more confident communicating in front of groups.”

4. Why do you want to work here?

This question tests how much research you’ve done on the company, its people, and the job.

Employers want to know that you’re genuinely interested in working for them, and don’t see this opportunity as “just a job”. Research the company’s values, culture, and achievements, and then link them to your own goals.

Example: “I saw on LinkedIn that X members of staff were celebrating work anniversaries with you. That really stuck out to me as I want to be with a company for the long term and contribute to your overall success. I can really see that is on offer here and it really excites me.”

5. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Be honest about your long-term goals and how they align with the company’s direction.

Employers want to see that you’re motivated and plan to grow with the company. Focus on your professional development and the contributions you can make, rather than just climbing the ladder.

Example: “I hope to have taken on more responsibility in a customer service role, and want to continue to develop my skills while supporting the business and being a welcoming voice that people can trust.”

6. Do you have any questions for us?

Never say no! This is your chance to show enthusiasm and interest.

Employers want to know that you’re genuinely invested and want to leave no stone unturned. Prepare one or two thoughtful questions about the company culture, team structure, vacancy, or the next steps in the hiring process.

Example: “How would you know someone was succeeding in the role? What do you enjoy most about working here?”

Interviews are your opportunity to make a lasting impression. In thinking about how you’ll answer these common interview questions, you can show employers that you’re confident, capable, and ready to take the next step in your career with them.
